Honolulu Rail Puts Squeeze on Banana Patch

Op-Ed

by Concerned Resident

As a lifetime Pearl City resident and opponent of the Mayor’s rail plan, the proposed park and ride site at Pearl Highlands Center brings my concerns even closer to home than expected. The families who live on the 12-acre lot known as the Banana Patch have lived there for their entire lives and may now be forced to move to make room for this park and ride lot. They didn’t even have a say in it nor any notification. They just noticed surveyors taking measurements on their land one day and started to question. Boy, what a surprise.

If I was told to give up my home that I grew up in to make room for a public transportation system, or any reason for that matter, I would be enraged. Where’s Council member Okino to speak up and defend his constituents’ way of life and property? Oh yeah, he was a city planner for 40 bureaucratic years before becoming an elected official who is out of touch with his community.
