'The Sovereignty Conversation—Community Forums' Set to Air Tuesday

Public invited to Mapunapuna ‘Olelo studios for live program on February 25, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

By Dr. Kioni Dudley

The second (of twelve) community forums for The Sovereignty Conversation, will have a new date and a new venue this month — February 25 at ‘Olelo Studios in Mapunapuna from 7:00 to 9:00. The public is invited to attend and participate. The program will be televised live on Channel 53 and will be streamed live worldwide from the website www.thesoverigntyconversation.org.

These forums precede the convention of native Hawaiians “to organize a modern Hawaiian nation.” No matter what form of sovereignty is adopted, every person in the islands will be affected. Conversely, the breadth and scope of the new nation may well be limited by the amount of non-Hawaiian buy in. Knowing what is going on and what it’s all about is important for everybody. This series offers the chance for all views to be presented, and all voices to be heard.

The Tuesday forum will offer important aspects of Hawaiian history that require the restoration of some form of Hawaiian nationhood, the true history that has not been heard before. Jon Osorio will discuss how Hawaiians ruled, using Umi, King Kamehameha III, and Queen Lili’uokalani as examples. Kioni Dudley will look at expansionism in America during the same time, and how it led naturally to American invasion, and eventual occupation and colonization of Hawai’i. Poka Laenui will look at the multiple unlawful actions between the time of the Overthrow and Annexation. Jeff Rasmussen will sing his well-known “Song of Sovereignty.” Puanani Burgess will recite her poem, “Hawai’i Pono’i.“ And Christopher Lum Lee will read passages from President Cleveland’s “Address to Congress” confirming that the President and the American Congress were fully aware that Annexation of Hawaii would be a totally unlawful action. It should be a night to remember.

Come and watch it at ‘Olelo Studios or watch it live on Channel 53.
