Makakilo-Kapolei Neighborhood Board Recommended Slate
by Kioni Dudley
Aloha Friends,
On this last Wednesday evening, six of the nine members of the Makakilo-Kapolei-Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board voted to force you sit in commuter traffic for another forty-five minutes each way every day of your lives, starting in a very few years. Why did they do that? So that a Texas-based developer can profit by putting 11,750 houses on one-third of the Oahu farmland that grows fruits and vegetables for the local market. It doesn't matter that more time in traffic will mean that you miss seeing your kids grow up, that you never have dinner together, that you are stressed out at home and at work, that you don't have leisure time. It doesn't matter that the farmland we will lose may well spell the difference for future survival on this island. Developers, unions, and big business have infiltrated every level of government, including the Neighborhood Boards. They get their people to pass what is best for them.
It's obviously time for a change. We need a Neighborhood Board that is genuinely concerned about our quality of life. A board that will act for us. This will require several new faces. And you just received a ballot for Neighborhood Board elections, or will receive it today.
As the President of the Friends of Makakilo, I am asking you to take this Neighborhood Board election that started today very, very seriously. The Neighborhood Board is not a Community Association. It is the grass-roots level of our city government. The place where government deals with real people-problems in dialog with the people.
Look carefully at these seven candidates below. Read what they have agreed to. I vouch for all of them, and I ask you to take the time to vote for them. Get everyone in your home who can vote to do so. And, please, pass this message on to your friends.
We can take back our government. The place to start is with this local-level election that is taking place now. We really, really need your vote.
Dr. Kioni Dudley
President, Friends of Makakilo
P.S. Make your vote more powerful by voting for only these seven, rather than nine.
