District I Candidates Try to Boot Rivals Out of Race

Honolulu District I special election candidates Matthew LoPresti and Celeste (Lacaden) Lacuesta wax moral indignation while challenging the residence qualifications of fellow candidates Kioni Dudley, Jason T. Espero and Mel Kahele

One of the requirements for running in the Honolulu City Council District I special election is that a candidate must be a registered voter living in the District. Candidate Kioni Dudley came under fire from rival candidate and fellow Ph.D. Matthew LoPresti for allegedly violating that stipulation.

Soon candidate Celeste (Lacaden) Lacuesta challenged the residence legitimacy of rival candidates Jason T. Espero and Mel Kahele, and also joined in the residency challenge to Kioni Dudley. Lacuesta ran in the 2010 primary election for the state senate against Jason Espero's father, fellow Democrat and incumbent Will Espero, and lost, 67.3 percent to 19.5 percent.

According to the Honolulu City Clerk's office, which is in charge of elections on Oahu, a candidate must 1) be a resident of the City and County of Honolulu and 2) be a "duly qualified elector of Council District 1."
