Rutgers Freshman Filmed during Sex Commits Suicide

Two classmates, 18, charged with filming, posting to the Internet

A Rutgers freshman, Tyler Clementi, 18, who was taped without his knowledge having a homosexual encounter, has committed suicide. His college roommate shot the surreptitious videotape. Both the roommate, Dharun Ravi, 18, and Dharum's friend, Rutgers student Molly Wei, also 18, were charged with illegally taping another student having sex and posting the tape on the Internet.

This kind of outrageous invasion of privacy is all too common, with the perpetrators getting off with hardly a slap on the wrist in all too many cases.

A week ago photos and video of a 16-year-old being gang raped at a rave in British Columbia, Canada, that hundreds attended were posted to Facebook by one of the rapists. The images went viral, spreading "like wildfire," and RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) have not been able to get them all off the Internet. Several people, when asked to remove them by police, refused. The victim's high school classmates saw the images and the victim, who received medical treatment for her injuries, is reportedly not doing well.

Then there are the well-known gross invasions of privacy of such celebrities as Paris Hilton and Pam Anderson, both of whom were reportedly very upset when sex tapes of them went online and viral. In Paris' case, she was caught in yet another incident involving numerous items she had in storage. When she overlooked payment, someone bought the items and resold them to a "Sultan of Sleaze" who posted the embarrassing possessions online.
