Helen Thomas 'Resigns' over Israel Comment

Helen Thomas, 89, whose parents were Lebanese, made the comment that Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" to a rabbi at the White House’s May 27 Jewish Heritage Celebration. When asked where they should go, she suggested their countries of origin. Her remarks were caught on video.

The next thing we know, she is roundly condemned and then "resigns" from Hearst newspapers! She also issues regrets over her statements! How did they get her to do that? After all, Helen has been following the Israeli/Palestinian situation closely and it's no secret that she has been upset over the suffering of the Palestinians at the hands of Israel.

Here is Helen's full statement, posted on June 4 to her website:

I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.

Here's the offending video.

BBC News carries the story of Helen's sudden departure from Hearst.
