Charles Djou is running in the special election to fill the remainder of Congressman Neil Abercrombie's unexpired term. Abercrombie has announced that he will resign effective February 28, 2010 to focus on his gubernatorial race.

The date of the special election has not been fixed, but could take place as early as May 1, 2010 or as late as the primary in September.

Regardless of who wins the special election, all three candidates (Djou [R], Colleen Hanabusa [D] and Ed Case [D]) have said they will also run in the regularly scheduled elections later this year to fill the next full term for District 1 (urban Honolulu).
